Soldering of metal and titanium frames

Metal or titanium frames are remedied by a soldering technique. Of these, titanium frame soldering is very specialised and is therefore undertaken by very few professionals. At Rapidus Optik, however, this is possible, as is, of course, the soldering of plain metal frames.

It is important to be aware that any part of the frame that breaks – be it the front, the hinge, the wrist or the lens flange – will not be 100% bonded after soldering. However, if the frame is otherwise still in good condition, it is always worth trying soldering. You can then use the repaired frame as a spare pair of glasses, but it can also be a quick fix. It is definitely better value for money than a complete new pair of glasses.

Unfortunately, you can find solutions where titanium frames are soldered to a non-titanium base material. Unfortunately, the frame is then damaged and the soldering cannot be scraped off afterwards, so it cannot be repaired. Titanium frames can only and exclusively be repaired by soldering titanium material.

Repair of plastic spectacle frames

Soldering is not an option for plastic frames. Gluing could possibly work, but it is very rare to find an optician who would do it. It is a very complex matter. The plastic where it would be glued would become very hard, so it is not recommended.

At Rapidus Optics they recommend ordering the correct parts if the plastic breaks. If it is no longer possible to order a part of the same model from the manufacturer, they can usually replace the damaged part with an aftermarket part.
