UV protection – Smart sunglass lenses

Nowadays, you can wear sunglasses comfortably not only if you don’t have any problems with your eyesight. Because we can choose from a range of high-quality, 100% UV-filtering dioptric sunglass lenses even if our eyes need correction.

The ZEISS and Seiko brands offer a wide range of coloured lenses from 6% to 96% darkness. It should be noted here that the percentage does not indicate the degree of UV filtering, as even a colourless lens can be 100% UV filtered. But coming back to colour, whether we are talking about uniform, transition or even extreme or medical tinting, the range offered by Rapidus can satisfy all colour needs.

UV radiation – A real danger to the eyes!

UV rays can cause not only short-term discomfort – such as glare, inflammation or other eye problems – but also long-term, irreversible damage. These include juvenile cataracts or macular degeneration. Because these rays are completely invisible and cannot be felt, they are even more dangerous. This is why 100% UV protection is essential all year round.

In some circumstances, UV rays can be even more dangerous:

  • In summer, when UV radiation levels are highest
  • During certain times of the day (between 11 am and 3 pm)
  • In certain places, the reflection of UV radiation can be as high as 80% (e.g. from the sand on the beach or from the surface of snow)

Harmful effects of UV radiation

It is important to be aware that almost half of all blindness in the world is caused by the onset of cataracts. In many cases, the harmful effects of prolonged exposure to UV radiation, which clearly increases the risk of developing eye damage, may also be responsible. Just as we protect our skin with different sun creams, it is equally important to protect our eyes from the sun’s rays. While some eye damage is reversible, some of it is unfortunately permanent and can lead to complete loss of vision. As mentioned above, UV radiation has been linked to the development of cataracts, but it can also be responsible for the development of ciliary epithelium, certain retinal lesions and even malignant tumours.

Prescription sunglasses lens colors

For dioptric sunglasses, the choice of lens colour is just as important as perfect dioptre and 100% UV filtering. There’s also a wide range to choose from, so you’re sure to find the right pair for you – depending on the conditions you’ll be using them in. In addition to the common sunglass colours such as brown, greenish-grey or grey, there are many other colours to choose from. Now let’s take a look at some of them and see which ones are the best choice for you!

The pale yellow or orange colours have an excellent contrast enhancing effect, making them ideal for driving, sporting, hunting or shooting. Pale blue, for example, can enhance contrast on large concrete surfaces or tarmac by making the scene stand out against a grey background. Brown, on the other hand, pushes the colours of the scene towards the greenish tones, giving a more pleasant, natural visual experience and making the environment appear more welcoming. Whichever colour you choose, it’s available in both single and multifocal lenses!

Selective light absorption for better contrast

The main cause of stray light is blue light, which can impair and disturb our vision. This is where ZEISS Skylet® colours can be of great help to our eyes. Thanks to their improved absorption properties, contrast perception and colour vision can be significantly improved. They help us to see more calmly and clearly, even in extreme lighting conditions.

As with all ZEISS lenses, the sports lenses are available in a premium Individual version, where the lens is fully customised for maximum visual experience.

Dioptric sunglasses - polarised lenses

A common disturbing phenomenon, for example when driving a car or on a waterfront, is the reflection of light from horizontal surfaces as a strong glare. This can be almost blinding. Polarised lenses reduce this phenomenon to such an extent that you can see without squinting, so you can see more comfortably in extra bright conditions, with 100% UV filtering. Wearing them during the day is recommended for extreme sports, driving, water sports and winter sports.

The secret of sunglasses lenses with polarized filters:

When light reflects off a flat surface, such as when sunlight reflects off a wet road surface, the water will reflect some of the light. This can cause glare, which can be reduced by using sunglass lenses with polarised filters. These simply filter out the horizontally oscillating light elements – the reflected light is horizontally polarised, which is filtered by the vertical micro-mesh structure of the polarised lens – so that vision is calmer and safer.

Smart sunglass lenses that adapt to changing light conditions

ZEISS AdaptiveSun dioptric sunglass lenses change their darkness depending on the level of UV radiation, while providing continuous UV and glare protection.

There is a reason why we find it difficult to see clearly and sharply in changing lighting conditions. Even when wearing sunglasses with UV protection – which reduce glare and provide more comfortable imaging – we may have difficulty seeing in constantly changing light conditions. Lenses may be too dark in a shady place, but they can also be too bright when we are in bright sunshine. We tend to take off our sunglasses, leaving our eyes unprotected.
