Symptoms of cataracts
A cataract is actually a clouding and cataracting of the lens of the eye to such an extent that it interferes with sharp vision. This is why it can be a primary symptom when the glasses you are wearing no longer work. They also become greyer and duller, with faded colours. Dark places can look even darker, while daylit areas can be dazzling. See an optometrist who can diagnose very quickly whether this is indeed the problem.
What can cause this eye problem?
Cataracts can be congenital, but they can also be caused by an injury or physical or chemical exposure. It is also important to note that general diseases such as high blood pressure, arterial stenosis or diabetes can also increase the possibility of its occurrence. It can also be predisposed to smoking and heavy alcohol consumption, and can be caused by UV radiation and side effects of medication. It is by no means certain that the cataract affects the whole lens, as it can develop in any part of the lens. It can be found in both eyes, but it may be found in different degrees.
What is the solution?
Unfortunately, cataracts cannot be treated with medicines, and other optical devices cannot help. The only solution is a short cataract surgery, which takes about 15-30 minutes. This involves removing the cataractous, cloudy lens and replacing it with a specially tailored artificial lens. The procedure, which is routine, is mostly performed under local anaesthetic and you can go home the same day. Aftercare is also short: you will need to apply eye drops for a while, as prescribed by your doctor.
