Cylindrical eye

What does a cylindrical eye (astigmatism) mean?

Cylindrical eye, also known as astigmatism, is the third most common refractive error – after farsightedness and nearsightedness – affecting vision. It is a type of refractive error in which light rays falling on the surface of the eye are not reflected at the same point. You could say that the eye does not have one focal point. The cornea of a cylinder eye is more barrel-shaped, as opposed to the perfectly spherical surface of a healthy eye.

How does a cylindrical eye develop and what are the symptoms?

It is usually thought of as a congenital problem, but of course it can also develop from other causes, such as an accident. It is often the case that only one eye is affected, but early detection is very important to prevent further deterioration.

The symptoms of a cylindrical eye can include blurred vision, frequent and severe headaches and a loss of sharpness of vision. As these symptoms may also indicate other eye problems, it is best to seek professional advice as soon as possible.

How can it be treated?

It is essential that our eyes are properly corrected, otherwise our vision can deteriorate further, become blurred and even develop blurred vision. This is why you should not wear glasses that have not been thoroughly tested, for example.

The appropriate correction can be made with a so-called cylinder lens or with a toric contact lens, depending on which one you feel is most ideal. These can be used to eliminate distortions of the corneal surface and ensure perfectly sharp vision.
