All the sunglasses available at Rapidus Optics can be machined, dioptric lenses can be ordered for the frame, or dioptric lenses can be ordered in advance. A pair of lenses that are actually sunglasses dark can give the wearer a fantastically comfortable feel.
Even for lenses with a larger base curvature, it is possible to request this. ZEISS offers a range of dioptric sunglasses with a higher base curvature. It is even possible to fit dioptric sunglass lenses in a sporty curved frame without the lens being strained, i.e. not being cramped in the frame.
What is meant by the term “live”?
This problem is not always visible, but with sunglasses it is usually quite visible. There is a small wavy part around the edge of the frame on the lens where the frame meets the lens. This indicates that the lens is actually stretched there and not well positioned in the frame. This may be due to improper base curvature or lens size, a grinding error, or it may occur when the lens is being fitted into the frame. This tension condition can be remedied very nicely by eliminating such tiny errors.
Lenses that darken in the light – how can we adapt our glasses?
Today, there is a wide variety of colours in the range of dioptric lenses that darken in the light. You can now choose not only the classic green, brown and grey, but also blue, mirror and other colours. What’s more, thanks to continuous improvements by manufacturers, the response time of lenses has been dramatically improved, and they can now actually darken in a matter of seconds when needed.
They also clear in less and less time when the lens is no longer exposed to UV. There are also special darkening lenses that darken behind the windscreen of the car, even though all car windscreens – and even the side windows on newer models – are UV filtered.
This is of course mainly recommended for those who spend a lot of time behind the wheel. Lenses that darken in the light always have a tiny base colour, and this is where the darkening starts. ZEISS offers a lens made with the so-called AdaptiveSun® technology. This means that the dioptric sunglasses have a base tint of 40% and this darkens to 60-75%.
You can think of this as meaning that if a lighter brown lens is exposed to strong sunlight, it can darken further. This is a very popular solution, as you can put the glasses on even in slightly overcast weather and they will still perform the function of a lighter pair of sunglasses. If the sun comes out in the meantime, it reacts and darkens in a matter of seconds.
However, you should be aware that the basic colour will always remain the same, and the lighter the lens, the lighter it will not be.
