Proteins, grease and dust can build up on the surface of contact lenses during the first use, which can lead to irritation, blurred vision or even infection. Cleaning both biweekly and monthly contact lenses is essential to ensure safe and comfortable wear.
Steps for cleaning contact lenses:
-
Thorough hand washing
Always start by washing your hands thoroughly with soap, avoiding oily hand creams. After washing your hands, wipe them dry with a lint-free towel.
-
Cleaning – rubbing
Even lenses marked “no-rub” should be gently wiped clean. Place the lens in the palm of your hand, then drizzle a conditioning liquid over it. Gently clean both sides in a circular motion for half a minute. Then rinse thoroughly with the liquid.
-
Storage
Always store cleaned contact lenses in fresh contact lens solution for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight.
-
Storage maintenance
After use, rinse the case with disinfectant, but never with tap water, leave it open to dry and replace it at least once a month, but not more than every three months.
It is important never to use tap water or other water-based liquids, as they can carry a serious risk of infection. Use only multi-purpose care fluids designed for this purpose.
Contact lenses in summer – What to look out for?
Air conditioning, hot humid air and pollen can often make your lenses feel irritating. Therefore, the use of artificial tears is recommended in case of complaints. Dry eyes can also impair the fit of the lens and cause discomfort with every blink.
Sun, water, contact lenses? Be careful!
Contact lenses are not compatible with salty seawater: salt can clog the pores of the lens, causing water extraction and reducing oxygen supply to the eye. This can lead to irritation, visual deterioration and damage to the protective surface layer. It is therefore advisable to remove the lens or use swimming goggles before swimming. It is always a good idea to carry a care solution, spare lenses and goggles.
