Symptoms of ocular hyperopia
The most important symptom of strabismus is double vision, which a tiny child obviously cannot signal, so the brain soon suppresses the second image, i.e. it switches off the vision of the wrong-angled eye. This leads to a failure to develop field vision, as the two eyes are unable to work together, which can lead to even more problems in older age.
Learning difficulties may also develop at an older age, so it is worth having an eye examination in these cases. In addition, symptoms such as sensitivity to light, eye fatigue, uncoordinated eye movements, dizziness or nausea (for example when travelling) may also occur.
What can be done about it?
As with most eye problems, early detection and prompt treatment is very important. This will usually be a very long process, and can take years. After an accurate diagnosis of refractive error, the first and most important task is to correct the refractive error by fitting the correct glasses. In addition, if the problem has already resulted in blurred vision – a very common phenomenon – it may also be necessary to cover the correct side in children. If all these treatments have been successful, surgical repair of the eye muscles may be considered.
