progressive working lens in front of monitor

A well-adjusted workstation not only increases productivity, but also protects eye, neck and shoulder health in the long term. This is particularly important for those who wear multifocal or office-type glasses, as the design of these lenses is optimised for specific viewing directions. But what does this mean in practice?

Monitor position: centre, below eye level

One of the most important aspects is the correct position of the monitor. The top edge of the screen should be slightly below the eye line – about 5-10 centimetres. This is particularly important if you are wearing progressive or Office lenses, as the lower part of these are used for sharp vision at close and intermediate distances.

If the monitor is too high, it tries to focus through the wrong dioptre part of the lens, which can cause headaches, eye fatigue and stiff neck.

Tip: The monitor should be straight in front of you, not tilted to the side, to prevent muscle strain from constant sideways head posture.

The right viewing distance

The ideal monitor distance is between 50 and 70 centimetres, depending on the size of the screen. With a multifocal lens this becomes even more important, as the middle and lower zones of the lens are used to focus on the screen.

In the case of office lenses, it is worth considering the maximum working distance for the lens type (e.g. 1-2 metres), as they are specifically optimised for this range.

The role of lighting

One of the keys to comfortable vision is creating the right lighting conditions. A window or direct light source behind a monitor can cause glare and reflections that make you squint, which in turn can strain your eyes.

Tip: Position the monitor so it doesn’t reflect windows or lights, and use diffused, even ceiling lighting in the workspace. Adjust the brightness of the monitor to the light in the room so it’s neither too dark nor too glaring.

Matching posture and type of glasses

For multifocal and Office lenses, the natural position of the head and neck is of paramount importance. Constantly looking up or down is not only uncomfortable but can also cause long-term physical discomfort.

It is therefore particularly important to:

  • the monitor does not force you to look up all the time
  • you don’t have to lean back or forward to see clearly
  • the height of the table, chair and screen should be consistent

What to consider when choosing glasses?

If you’re looking for the ideal solution for computer work, consider Office lenses designed specifically for office environments. They provide a large field of view at short to medium distances (reading, using a screen, talking to a colleague) and are designed to provide sharp vision even when you are in a natural posture.

However, a well-adjusted workstation will only produce the best results when used with lenses that are matched to the wearer’s specific parameters. This is why expert eye examinations and personalised lens fitting are of paramount importance.
