From OCT scan (Optical Coherence Tomography) is a modern, painless ophthalmic diagnostic procedure that produces highly detailed cross-sectional images of the internal structures of the eye, the fundus. The light-ray imaging provides a precise view of the layers of the retina, the macula (the place of sharp vision) and the optic nerve.
The advantage of the technology is that it can detect eye diseases in a symptom-free state, at a very early stage, even lesions that would not be detected by conventional tests or only later.
What diseases can be detected with an OCT scan?
OCT is highly accurate in the early detection of the following conditions:
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Glaucoma (glaucoma)
- Eye damage caused by diabetes (diabetic retinopathy)
- Other lesions affecting the optic nerve and retina
- Retinal edema, early signs of retinal detachment
The test is not only useful for diagnosis, but also for monitoring treatments already started, so the doctor can see exactly how the eye is responding to therapy.
Why is an OCT scan particularly important over the age of 50?
The risk of several serious eye diseases increases significantly in the over-50s. Examples include:
- age-related macular degeneration (AMD),
- glaucoma,
- and retinal changes associated with metabolic changes.
The WHO (World Health Organization) also strongly recommends regular regular eye screenings, of which OCT is one of the most important, as early detection can even prevent vision loss.
A regular OCT scan over 50 years:
- drastically reduces the risk of vision loss,
- helps to detect asymptomatic diseases in time,
- a better quality of life in the long term.
